If you’re a professional driver, then you’re probably constantly looking for ways to improve the safety of your rig. That’s probably why you’re looking at Truck Defender Bumpers to upgrade your International® truck bumper. But don’t focus so much on your truck that you forget to take care of yourself. It’s hard on your body to sit in the driver’s seat for hours on end, even if it doesn’t require much physical activity.

That’s why we’ve provided some tips for staying healthy on the road. Check them out and consider applying some of them on your next haul, no matter where it takes you in North America.

Keeping a Healthy Diet

Diet is the foundation of your health. Eating right can make a world of difference in your mental health, so you can stay more focused on the job, and your physical health, so you don’t feel as achy after a long drive.

The problem is, healthy foods aren’t always accessible on the road, and they’re generally not cheap either. We’re not saying it’ll be easy, but it’ll probably be worth it. If you’ve just got a day haul, consider packing a lunch from home using healthy ingredients available to you. If your haul is going to last for a few days or longer, consider taking advantage of more grocery stores as opposed to fast food outlets.

Look for lean meats, fruits and vegetables, nuts, and other foods that are great sources of vitamins and minerals. We also recommend looking for foods that digest slowly, so you’ll feel fuller, longer.

Stay Active

Exercise goes hand in hand with diet in terms of keeping you healthy, so consider spending some of your break times getting your body moving and the blood flowing. Go for a walk, perform calisthenic exercises, or at the very least stretch out your muscles. There are many exercise options that are easy to take on the road with you, you’ll just need to find something that works best for you.

Avoid Dehydration

Drink lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of water. Even if it means a couple more bathroom stops, staying hydrated for a job that requires prolonged focus is not only crucial to keep you healthy, but it can also keep other commuters safe.

Caffeine is fine in moderation, but it’s also a dehydrant, so you’ll need to balance out any coffee or tea with more water. You may also want to consider fruit juices or sports drinks to keep your sugar levels up. But, again, in moderation.

Resting

Sleep can be another area that’s often difficult to maintain on the road, but it’s just as important. And not just power naps, but a good night’s sleep in a proper bed. The average adult needs about 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night, and your employer is legally obligated to give you enough non-driving time that this can be accomplished. Take full advantage of this time, and make sure you’re sleeping in your own bed, in a motel, or in a comfortable bed in a sleeper cab. This will leave you feeling more alert the next day.
